Loblolly Pine Plantation Management Recommendations

Below is a list of management recommendations to insure that you get the most from your new stand of  Loblolly Pine Seedlings. Time frame will vary depending on the individual site conditions. Boundary lines and fire breaks should be maintained at all times. Seek professional forestry advice at the first sign of problems.

 Age

1- 10
Check annually for competition problems such as over-crowding, shading by competing hardwoods or excessive competition from vines such as honeysuckle and kudzu. If problems develop, a release herbicide treatment can be made. Prompt assessment and treatment will pay big dividends at harvest.

15 - 20
Check annually for good growth rate, disease, insect or animal problems.
Begin prescribed burning to reduce fire hazard and/or competition from hardwoods and other plants and continue at 3-5 year intervals. The first thinning is usually made during this time frame. Stand should be evaluated beginning at age 15 and thinned as soon as the market will support it. Thinning should be a combination row/low thinning to provide access and to remove suppressed, diseased or poorly formed trees. Primary product harvested will be pulpwood.

22 - 30
Second thinning should be needed 7-8 years after the first thinning, to reduce stand to final crop trees. Thinning should be designed to provide optimum spacing for the remaining trees to grow into sawtimber. Primary products harvested will be pulpwood and chip-n-saw.

35 - 50
Clearcut harvest and reforest. Harvest age should be determined by monitoring the growth rate of the stand. Harvest when growth rate begins to stagnate and market conditions warrant.
